Braden River graduate Krista Wells recently was named Ave Maria University softball team’s MVP and was chosen first team all-conference for the Sun Conference. The junior center fielder finished with a .348 batting average, a .430 on base percentage and a conference leading 37 stolen bases. Here is an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week.

What does it mean to you to have been named your team’s MVP?
It was a great honor receiving the MVP award. My coach always reminded me that I was a leader on the team, so I was always working to lead the team by example on and off the field. It was a great feeling when he acknowledged me for all of my hard work by naming me the MVP.

What do you enjoy the most about softball?
I love being part of a team. We spend a lot of time together, so we get to know each other pretty well and we become our own little family. We create a lot of memories together, which is awesome because we will have those forever.

Would you rather be in the field or at the plate?
I love being at the plate and getting things started for the team. It’s an awesome (feeling) when you get a hit and hear the crowd cheering for you. One hit can change an entire game.

What are you studying?
My major is biology. I hope to earn a biology degree and use it to become a pharmaceutical representative.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I would love to go to Africa. My sister went to Africa last summer for a mission trip, and she had a life-changing experience. Hearing about all of the things she did over there and the lives that she changed makes me want the life-changing experience too.

Who is your biggest role model?
My biggest role model has always been my granddad. Although he has now passed away, he’s always been my biggest inspiration. He taught me a lot about life and how to live it. He had two famous quotes that he never let me forget, “winners never quit, quitters never win,” and “always help a child” so I make sure I live by those every day.
