‘Shared Light: Lynn Goldsmith’

During the past half-century, Lynn Goldsmith’s photographs of celebrities and nature have been featured in glossy magazines and have been the subject of 17 books, including “Patti Smith: Before Easter After.” Goldsmith’s work is also held in the collections of numerous private collectors and museums, including the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Now, her photos are featured in an indoor and outdoor exhibition at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Runs through Sept. 8.

Sarasota’s own Vien the Comic Doc, a practicing physician by day and comedian by night, is the opening act for headliner Adam Muller, another brainy type. Muller is a New York-based stand-up comic with an MIT education who walked away from a finance career for the stage. Like Vien, whose real name is Vien Phommachanh, Muller has harnessed the power of social media to build his audiences. He's followed it up with a Dry Bar Comedy Special and segments on Sirius XM. But there’s nothing like connecting with audiences in person. Runs through Sept. 6.
‘Bat Boy: The Musical’

Based on an outlandish tabloid story, “Bat Boy: The Musical” is the kind of comedy horror show that plays to the strengths of the creative team at The Sarasota Players community theater. Recommended for adults, the musical follows the tale of a mysterious creature discovered in a West Virginia cave. The half-bat, half-boy is adopted by the town veterinarian and domesticated by the vet’s wife. What could go wrong? Runs through Sept. 6.

The Jump Start Band is the featured attraction in the monthly concert series and block party. The Jump Start Band will play classic rock from the 1960s through the 1980s. Proceeds from the event will benefit Save Our Seabirds. The event includes local food vendors, beer trucks and sponsors booths along with games and activities for the kids, presented by Grace Community Church.

Directed by Rob Reiner, “The Princess Bride” (1987) anticipated the meta trend by at least three decades. William Goldman’s screen adaptation of his own novel is presented as a fairytale being read by a grandfather to his ailing grandson.The story about a farmhand and his companions who try to wrest Princess Buttercup from the clutches of Prince Humperdinck features an all-star cast that includes Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest and Carol Kane, to name just a few. Like “The Wizard of Oz” and “Gone With the Wind,” this is a film that consistently tops moviegoers' all-time favorites.
