As some Sarasota playgoers already know, Luke Manual’s Dingbat Theatre Project takes classic tales and puts its own iconoclastic spin on them. The public is invited to participate in citizen science at its finest for this annual, family-friendly research day. Volunteers can help out as boat captains, snorkelers, kayakers or boat crew during the two-day event, helping tally how many bay scallops are in the bay before returning them to the water. On Aug. 22, teams will meet at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron headquarters at 1717 Ken Thompson Parkway, and on Aug. 23, they will meet at Mar Vista Restaurant, 760 Broadway St.

If it’s the dog days of summer, it’s time for play reading festivals in Sarasota. The second in Sarasota Jewish Theatre’s Newish Jewish Play Reading series is Stephen Kaplan’s take on the classic Golem tale. It follows a sculptor trying to get her life together after her husband’s death. Her son is also suffering and flunking his Spanish class. What if a hunk of clay came to life and solved their problems? Directed by Yinoelle Colon.

Harvest United Methodist Church hosts a community concert by the Manatee County Concert Band to benefit Meals on Wheels Plus of Manatee.
