+ White pelican feels the heat at Save Our Seabirds
Call him a true snowbird. An 18-pound white pelican healed at Save Our Seabirds in six weeks, giving him enough time to mingle with the flight of white pelicans that will migrate north for summer. The pelican was brought to Save Our Seabirds with a two-piece treble hook attached to his right wing. In the process of trying to free himself, he tore a 7-inch gash in his right groin and a quarter-inch hole in his right wing. If he had taken much longer to heal, he would have had to wait until fall for release when a flock migrated south again. And that would have forced him to do what no snowbird wants to do: Stick around for the summer.
