WEEKEND BEST BET: Lakewood Ranch YMCA 10th Anniversary Open House

The Lakewood Ranch branch of the YMCA is celebrating 10 years in business.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, attendees can visit the YMCA, located at 5100 Lakewood Ranch Blvd., and experience special fitness classes, jump in a bounce house and eat hot dogs and cake.

The original 27,000-square-foot YMCA location opened in March 2003 with about 500 memberships and programs such as youth sports, swim lessons and more. Within two years, it doubled its membership, and by 2009, it had surpassed its capacity of 2,200 memberships.

Last March, the YMCA unveiled a $2.1 million 13,000-square-foot addition, which included a new fitness center with 80 pieces of cardio equipment, an expanded free-weight area and two new circuit training lines, as well as a group exercise room, a yoga/dance classroom, a group cycling space and several small offices.
