In light of recent weather forecasts, this week seems like a good time to reminisce about the torrential downpour documented in an issue from 1981. Little is included about the inches of rainfall or how long the rain lasted. Photos tell the story of docked boats sinking, cars making wake as they drive down a flooded Ocean Boulevard and the Out-of-Door Academy campus being transformed into waterfront property.

Sept. 3, 1998

In a photo contest for Big Olaf Ice Cream, contestant Susan Jackson brought to life the phrase "You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream." The finished product won her the category of Most Creative photo with her friend Shelby Reeves posing for the photo.
