A 6-inch water main broke at 11 p.m. last night, causing the Longboat Key Police Department to shut down the intersection of Gulf of Mexico Drive and St. Judes Drive near Harry’s Corner Store and The Longboat Observer office.

According to Longboat Key Public Works Department Utilities Crew Manager John Michael, the water main, which possibly broke because of its age, has been repaired. Public Works employees continue to work to repair asphalt that lifted as a result of the breakage.

“We’re patching it up to see if the road is in good enough condition for driving, but a lot of asphalt repair is going to be needed,” Michael said.
