North end residents have seen the light at the end of the tunnel.

Longbeach Village resident Dan Whelan and Lands End resident and Commissioner Pat Zunz, among others, have been complaining about the lack of lighting at night on the west side of the intersection of Broadway and Gulf of Mexico Drive for more than a year.

Residents believe the lack of lighting in the area poses a safety threat to pedestrians crossing Gulf of Mexico Drive to head to the Broadway beach access.

Streets, Facilities, Parks & Recreation Manager Mark Richardson informed Whelan in an email Thursday that the town is working with Florida Power & Light Co. to replace the Broadway street sign with a lighted electric one. FP&L has also agreed to put a light on the top of the street sign. The work should be done in the coming months.

“Thank you very much for this update on the light on the sign on the west side of Broadway and GMD,” wrote Zunz in an email.
