Unconditional Surrender removed temporarily

by: Robin Roy City Editor

Less than a week after an agreement was reached to allow Unconditional Surrender to stay on the bayfront for 10 years, the controversial sculpture is being removed from its resting place, but only temporarily.

The Sculpture Foundation, which is selling the sculpture to Sarasota World War II veteran Jack Curran for $500,000, will perform some maintenance on Unconditional Surrender to prepare it to be a permanent fixture on the bayfront.

The sculpture was originally intended to be shown in Sarasota only temporarily, so its finish needs to be upgraded, and it will be secured to withstand hurricane winds.

Unconditional Surrender is scheduled to return to the bayfront July 11.
