State and county laws call for a $5 surcharge placed on each civil traffic fine in Sarasota County.

Money from the additional fine will go toward
driver’s education programs in public and nonpublic schools that require a minimum of 30 hours of a student’s time spent on behind-the-wheel training.

School board members voted unanimously Aug. 3 to accept Driver Enhancement Funds — which is estimated to be $235,000.

The funds can only be used for direct educational expenses.
