Although sixth-grader Nina Edelsbacher aspires to become a scientist, she also loves art and recently received the Best in Show award for her submission to Embracing Our Differences’ Everything is Equal art contest.

The international show, located in downtown Sarasota’s Island Park, exhibits original work by artists and runs until June 1.

Nina’s piece was chosen from more than 6,000 submissions from 52 countries. Her piece is a circle with the words “Choose a corner if you are different.”

“I wanted to focus on the simplicity of equality,” she says. “A circle has no corners, so no one is different.”

The NewGate School student also won a $1,000 cash prize for her school for her artwork.

Nina says she loves art because it is an accessible platform for everyone. When the Sarasota native is not sketching or working on her novel, she is planning her future in science.

The petite brunette says that she is humbled and honored by the experience and hopes her piece inspires people.

“Even though it’s simple, it has big meaning,” she says.
