The bald eagles of Longboat Key were John Ginaven’s topic as he spoke to the Longboat Key Garden Club members at their Feb. 28 meeting. Ginavan has been studying bald eagles for many years — the past 12 on Longboat Key. He described characteristics of bald eagles and said that females are always bigger than males and have a wingspan of up to 8 feet. Ginaven illustrated his remarks with photos taken by Longboat Key photographer Mary Lou Johnson. He added that the eagles are like many of the Key’s residents — they leave during the summer months.
