Goodwill and Sarasota Military Academy (SMA) teamed up for the first Goodwill school drive this past week. Students at SMA were asked to bring in donations of clothes, books and other miscellaneous items throughout the week for Goodwill. Whichever company had the most stuff collected would win a pizza party with pizza provided by Papa John’s at 3080 17th St.

LuAnne Kirschner, the public relations and communications director at Goodwill, said she was proud to report the success of the drive, and also said she was glad that she had contacted SMA about holding this first school drive because she knew how much they pride they instilled in the students about helping out in the community.

SMA’s Charlie company won the pizza party with 3,033 pounds of donated items collected. The entire academy collected 12,164 pounds total.

“The whole company was jumping with joy since we exceeded our expectations. We started off the week with only 100 to 200 items and then had over 3,000 items,” Mac Charalambous, a student in the Charlie company said. “By donating to one cause like Goodwill, they will be able to help so many people”.
