+ Sailors tap new head football coach
Sarasota High named Brian Ryals as its new head football coach Dec. 12.

Ryals replaces former coach Ed Volz, who resigned in October to focus on his family after serving as head coach since 2010.

Ryals spent the past three years serving as the Sailors’ offensive coordinator.

+ ODA boys blank Imagine High School
The Out-of-Door Academy boys soccer team defeated Imagine High 5-0 in district action Dec. 10.

The Thunder scored all five of its goals in the first half. Mark Sulimirski scored two goals to lead the way for ODA. Will Harwell, Richard Vicek and Tyler Wenger each added a goal.

With the win, ODA improves to 7-4 (5-2). The Thunder returns to action Dec. 20 versus Sarasota Christian.

+ Lady Thunder cruise to soccer victory
The Out-of-Door Academy girls soccer team cruised to a 9-1 victory over Imagine High School in a district contest Dec. 10.

Katie Lang powered ODA with two goals and four assists. Lexi Murphy added two goals and two assists. Sierra Dickerson scored a pair of goals. Abby Lagasse, Miller Condrack and Nicole Petron each added one goal.

+ Cougars rally for win against DeSoto
Trailing 3-1 with 15 minutes left in the game, Alex Turner scored three straight goals to lead the Cardinal Mooney boys soccer team to a 4-3 victory over DeSoto Dec. 12.

John Rodman scored the Cougars’ first goal on a penalty kick. Cardinal Mooney goalkeeper Michael Staikos had 11 saves.

Sarasota Christian Boys Basketball
The Sarasota Christian School boys basketball team held on to defeat Cardinal Mooney 72-63 Dec. 14.
Freshman Emmanuel Lambright scored half of the Blazers’ 36 first-half points. Lambright finished with a game-high 25 points, along with 13 rebounds and four assists. Blake Morrow scored 21 points and added seven assists. Brion Whitley hauled in nine rebounds, and Lance Helmuth added six rebounds.
