+ FHSAA announces football districts
The Florida High School Athletic Association released the final state series assignments for football for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.

Lakewood Ranch will move up to Class 7A to play alongside rival Braden River while The Out-of-Door Academy and St. Stephen’s will move up to Class 3A to join Cardinal Mooney.

Here are the complete districts for East County football teams:

Class 7A-District 10: Braden River, Lakewood Ranch, North Port, Palmetto and Sarasota
Class 3A-District 6: The Out-of-Door Academy, Cardinal Mooney, St. Stephen’s and Fort Myers Bishop Verot

+ Emily Bulfin sets new basketball record
Emily Bulfin sank nine 3-pointers on her way to setting a new school record in Lakewood Ranch’s 66-36 victory over Manatee Jan. 25.

Bulfin finished with 35 points. Elise Spiller added nine points, and Kyra Klarkowski had eight points.

+ Trevon Young’s double-double leads Pirates
Braden River High senior forward Trevon Young scored 19 points and hauled in 18 rebounds to lead the Pirates to a 60-48 victory over Venice Jan. 25.

+ Lakewood Mustangs fall to Cardinal Mooney Cougars
The Lakewood Ranch High boys basketball team fell to Cardinal Mooney 62-57 in non-district action Jan. 25.

Justin Otis scored 16 points, and Chaz Grady added 12 points for the Mustangs.

Antonio Blakeney scored 20 points and had seven rebounds to lead the way for the Cougars. Jamie Glassed added 18 points.

+ Lakewood JV grapplers take second at championship
The Lakewood Ranch High JV wrestling team finished second at the JV County Championships Jan. 23, at Palmetto High.

Tyler Abbott (120 pounds), Alex Calderon (145) and Nate Lancaster (185) won in their respective weight classes.

+ Thunder’s soccer season comes to a close with loss
The Out-of-Door Academy boys soccer team saw its season come to a close with a 2-0 loss to Sarasota Christian in the Class 1A-District 8 quarterfinals Jan. 23.

Peter Phaiphannarat and Joshua Markowski each scored a goal for the Blazers. Cam Murphy and Justis Slattery were each credited with an assist. Goalkeeper Brandon Shine had seven saves.

+ Pair of East County lifters qualifies for state meet
Braden River High weightlifter Sarah Weiss and Lakewood Ranch High weightlifter Amanda Johnson both finished third at the District 8 meet Jan. 25, at Port Charlotte.

Johnson (154 pounds) and Weiss (169 pounds) advance to the FHSSA Finals Feb. 9, at the Kissimmee Civic Center.

+ Lakewood Chargers win Kelme Cup
The Clearwater Chargers at Lakewood Ranch U12 Boys Red team won the Kelme Florida Cup Jan. 12 to Jan. 13.

The Chargers tied SAA Real Madrid 0-0 before beating Pinecrest Premier White (7-2), Lakeland FC Boys Black (2-1) and Sunrise Elite (4-1).

With the win, the Chargers became the top-ranked team in Florida and 12th in the nation.
