+ ODA remains unbeaten
The Out-of-Door Academy girls tennis team improved to 6-0 with wins over Clearwater Central Catholic March 4, and Sarasota High School March 5.

Maria Ross, M’Balia Bangoura, Alana Sherman, Savannah Sleight, Cheyenne Kerekes, Morgan Woods and Chloe Ruppert all recorded singles victories over the two-day span. Bangoura and Sherman and Caroline Whitten and Charlotte Dixon both earned doubles victories over Sarasota.

+ Cougars notch district win
The Cardinal Mooney High baseball team handed The Out-of-Door Academy its first district loss of the season with a 5-1 victory March 5.

Cougars pitcher Pat Heuler pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits and five walks. Heuler also drew a pair of walks and scored two of Cardinal Mooney’s runs.

Desmond Lindsay went 2-for-2 with a double, a walk and a run scored to lead the way for ODA at the plate. Alex Horan pitched six innings for the Thunder, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks.  

+ SCS keeps perfect record
The Sarasota Christian baseball team remained unbeaten with a 3-1 victory over First Baptist Academy March 8.

Senior right-hander Zach Quillian allowed one run on four hits while striking out nine. Chad Miller drove in a run for the Blazers (10-0).

+ Cougar lacrosse team scores win
The Cardinal Mooney boys lacrosse team improved to 4-1 with a 14-7 victory over Bishop Verot March 8.
Freshman Reagan Griffith scored four goals, and junior Sal Trinchetto added three goals and seven assists to power the Cougars. Adam Scalisi and Trey LaPorta added two goals apiece.

+ Sailors swing past Pirates
The Sarasota High baseball team defeated Braden River 4-1 March 8.
Zach McMullen went 2-for-4, and Mason Dancer went 2-for-2. Pitcher Josh Knies struck out four.

+ Golf event raises $39,000
More than 86 golfers teed off for the third annual Birdland Golf Classic Feb. 20, at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club.

The event, which is sponsored by the OriolesREACH program, raised more than $39,000 for the Miracle League of Manasota.


KUDOS: Olga Ianchuk
Olga Ianchuk captured a wild card into the main draw of a $50,000 women’s USTA Pro Circuit event to be held March 24 to March 31, at The Oaks Club.

Battling flu-like symptoms, the part-time Bradenton resident beat Mari Osaka 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 to win the wild card event March 10, at The Oaks Club.
