Senate passes resolution honoring Mote

The Florida Senate recognized Mote Marine Laboratory today in a resolution declaring the organization “a powerhouse of near-shore marine research” in honor of Mote’s 55th anniversary.

The resolution, which was passed by the Florida House of Representatives March 10, also commends Mote for its science and education efforts and its numerous academic affiliations with Florida universities, including its affiliation agreement with the University of South Florida that allows the institutions to formally work together.

“Members, it’s an honor today to do a resolution recognizing Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota,” Sen. Mike Bennett, R-Bradenton, said while introducing the resolution to the Senate, according to a prepared statement. “It’s my pleasure to introduce this resolution to commemorate the accomplishments of that important institution.”

Bennett also recognized Mote’s founding director, Dr. Eugenie Clark, who was inducted into the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame yesterday.

Mote President Dr. Kumar Mahadevan was in Tallahassee today and was recognized on the Senate floor after the resolution was passed.

“We thank the Senate for this tremendous honor,” Mahadevan said in the prepared statement.
