SCOPE seeks community improvements

True to its name, SCOPE — Sarasota County Openly Plans for Excellence — has big plans in the works to improve the community.

The nonprofit group will hold a half-day conference May 19 called “Community Data 2.0: A Community-wide Rebooting,” which seeks to gather information on creating a thriving community.

“The idea is to pay attention to the efforts of community members who have already collected information about how to make Sarasota County the best it can be,” said Tim Dutton, executive director of SCOPE.

That information can be about anything dealing with the county — social services, police work and financial.
A community-wide rebooting kicks off a process of defining new community goals.

SCOPE feels that many of the county’s nearly 400,000 residents have compiled a lifetime’s worth of knowledge in a variety of fields, and it seeks to have those people share that knowledge, so it can be compiled and used to point the county to a new direction.

“Community data efforts can be a powerful means to creating a better community for all of us,” said Dutton. “At this forum, people who care deeply about our collective community well-being will connect with those who have resources and skills to contribute relative to community data.”
