School days are about to start at the Longboat Key Education Center — but these aren’t exactly good old-fashioned school days.

Registration for this year’s programs is currently open; the fall semester begins Monday, Oct. 21.

And although the first day of school is still nearly a month away, Susan Goldfarb, Education Center executive director, has been busy prepping. The center has invested in new sound and production equipment, including additional speakers and ceiling projectors.

“Films are really big at the school, and I want them to be more enjoyable by being easier to hear and having sharper pictures,” Goldfarb said.

The fall semester is typically the least busy of the school’s three semesters and features regular favorites such as bridge, yoga, watercolor, Nia and “You’ve Got to See This Movie!”

The fall’s new course offerings are “Sweet and Spirited Yoga,” “Learning to Meditate: Practical Techniques to Develop Inner Peace” and “A Film Critic’s Guide to the Movie Watching Experience & the Digital Revolution in Movies.”

The semester will also feature two one-day Saturday workshops: “Social Media: The Basics” and “An Introduction to Traditional Chinese Brush Stroke Painting.”

Expect a packed schedule of courses, workshops, day trips and concerts — all of which you can learn about in the 2013-14 brochure that’s available now.
