School board considers selling property at Braden River HS

The Manatee County School Board will vote to potentially designate land it owns at Braden River High School as surplus property at a workshop today. 

Coming off a multi-million dollar budget deficit, county staff has said it needs to sell surplus property to balance the 2013-14 budget.

The board needs to sell more than $5 million in property sales this fiscal year to balance the budget and meet the minimum state requirement for reserves, staff says. 

At the 3 p.m. meeting today at 215 Manatee Avenue W., the board will vote on whether to designate a 10-acre undeveloped parcel it owns at Braden River High School as surplus property it intends to sell.

Staff estimates the value of the property, located at the northeast intersection of Caruso Road and State Road 70, to be $2,750,000. A new appraisal of the property is in process. 

Money accrued from the sale would go to reserves.

The school board also has its regular meeting at 5:45 p.m. tonight.
