Students from Colegio Montessori Chiaravalle in León, Mexico, visited students at The NewGate School for the second annual student exchange program April 15 through April 27. Eight fourth- through sixth- grade students participated in the two-week immersion program.

NewGate hosted a celebration Friday, April 26, on its campus to celebrate diversity. “This exchange program has been an enormous success,” said NewGate Upper Elementary School teacher Robin Howe.

“Friendships were cultivated (during) last year’s (program) and we can see significant advances in interest in the Spanish language and culture,”

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs awarded New College of Florida students Robert Matthew Klinkel and Andrea Brody-Barre Critical Language Scholarships. Only one in eight applicants was selected to participate in the Critical Language Scholarship Program, which offers intensive summer language institutes in 13 critical foreign languages.

Klinkel will travel in June to China to study Chinese. Brody-Barre will travel in June to Rabat, Morocco, to study Arabic at AMIDEAST, an American educational nonprofit.
