+Sarasota tops Lakewood Ranch 

The Sarasota High volleyball team came from behind to beat district rival Lakewood Ranch 3-2 Sept. 10. 

The Lady Sailors had been swept by the Lady Mustangs each of the past two seasons, including twice in the regional semifinals. 

After losing the first set 17-23, Sarasota bounced back to win the second set 26-24. Lakewood won the third set 18-25 before Sarasota won the final two sets 25-19, 16-14 on its home court. 

Jessica Shiffner finished with 15 kills, 24 digs and two aces to power Sarasota. Hannah Hritz added 12 kills and three aces. Anna Massey finished with seven kills, four blocks and four aces. Gabby Diaz dished out 33 assists to go along with 11 digs and two aces. 

However, the win won’t count toward the district standings. The schools decided only one match, the Tuesday matches on the schedule, would count. Sarasota and Lakewood will play their district game Sept. 22.

+Lady Blazers sweep Lady Panthers

The Sarasota Christian volleyball team rolled to a 25-8, 25-8, 25-20 victory versus Bradenton Christian Sept. 10. 

Cheyenne Miller recorded 16 kills and a block to lead the way for the Lady Blazers. Anikka Jensen added nine kills and three aces. Cassie Bontrager contributed seven kills and two aces. 

With the win, Sarasota Christian improved to 6-1 on the season.

+ODA boys swim past Port Charlotte

The Out-of-Door Academy boys swim team won eight individual and relay events to beat Port Charlotte 170-98 in a non-district meet Sept. 10. 

Zach Szmania powered the Thunder, winning both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. Sarsen Whatmore won the 100 backstroke, setting a new school record and helping lift the Thunder to victory. Laszlo Tengerdy and Charles Hayes won the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly, respectively.

On the girls side, Port Charlotte edged past ODA 151-140. 

Kate Patrice won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, as the Lady Thunder won seven events. Reece Whatmore also posted a pair of first-place finishes in the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle. Chloe Militzer won the 100 backstroke. 

+Orioles to host fall instructional league

The Baltimore Orioles will host the team’s Fall Instructional League Sept. 22 through Oct. 13, at Ed Smith Stadium, in Sarasota. 

The Instructional League program focuses on specific individual development while helping accelerate a player’s through the minor league system. 

All games, which are free and open to the public, will be played on the Main Field with free parking available in the East Lot.
