The federal government has awarded the city of Sarasota and Sarasota County a $23 million grant that will go toward affordable housing.

Sarasota is one of 56 places around the country to receive the grant.

The money will be used to buy, rehabilitate and sell 100 foreclosed homes; buy 17 vacant parcels and build homes on them; buy dilapidated homes, demolish them and build new ones; and complete phase three of the Janie’s Garden public-housing project.

The grant area is bordered roughly by University Boulevard, Ringling Boulevard, Tamiami Trail and Lockwood Ridge Road.

The $23 million is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
