Sarasota garden Club announces scholarship recipients

The Sarasota Garden Club awarded Jacquelyn Fullford of Booker High School and Michael J. Flowers its annual Natural Science Scholarship last week April 9 at their Annual Meeting and Luncheon at the Ritz Carlton Beach Club.

Jacquelyn Fullford, a senior at Booker High School received the Jean Hanson $2,000 Natural Science Scholarship for her work in the community and interest in conservation. The senior will major in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the University of Florida in the fall. She started Smart in ninth grade, a horse camp that works with children and adults with disabilities. In addition she interned at Lockwood Ridge Animal Hospital and has exhibited a llama and boa constrictor in her volunteer work.

Michael J. Flowers, a sophomore at New College received the Helen Mecklenburg Natural Science Scholarship. He is majoring in biology and chemistry and hopes to go to medical school after graduation. He has volunteered at Tidwell Hospice where he plays piano and sings to patients for musical therapy. Flowers grows herbs and plants for horticultural therapy and maintains the butterfly garden for patients.
