Sarasota County has hired a new procurement official out of Manatee County.

Melissa Wendel started this week, after spending the past eight years with the Manatee County Government, according to a statement. There she helped lead the county to its first of four National Procurement Institute's Achievement of Excellence awards.

The division Wendel is now leading in Sarasota County has earned the same award three years in a row.

“Melissa’s extensive background in government purchasing in the state of Florida, her understanding of the industry and her commitment to excellent customer service will allow us to continue to evolve as an innovative organization,” said Sarasota County Administrator Tom Harmer.

Wendel has more than 20 years of experience in procurement, and has held positions in Charlotte and Pinellas counties.

“I’m very excited for the opportunity to join the team at Sarasota County and to continue to serve the local community,” Wendel said in a press release. “I can’t wait to get to work and help further the procurement team’s mission of transparency, fiscal responsibility and providing excellent service.”

Wendel replaces Ted Coyman, who left for a position in Collier County last year after implementing a wide list of changes in the Sarasota department between 2011 and 2016.
