Sarasota County deputies investigate a death on Tamiami Trail

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a person floating in a water retention area 6:36 p.m. Monday, May 6, at the rear of a Publix complex in the 8400 block of Tamiami Trail.

The person has been identified as 56-year-old Joseph Gorey. Sarasota County Fire Paramedics treated him, but ultimately declared him dead dead at the scene.

There were no obvious signs of struggle on the scene, but detectives are working with the Medical Examiner's Office to determine the cause. The incident is under investigation, does not appear to be suspicious.
