Sand loss has prompted Longboat Key Public Works to place orange tape at the North Shore Road beach access, directing beach goers toward a safe access path that avoids the steep drop-off.

According to Public Works Director Juan Florensa, sand loss in the area was expected because the $4.5 million emergency beach project that deposited sand at the north end this summer was meant as a quick fix rather than a long-term solution.

The beach access remains open but Public Works is monitoring the situation daily to determine if conditions require a temporary closure.
