After a video surfaced showing Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Inc. President Paul Blackketter allegedly berating someone, Sarasota County and SANCA chairman Bill Robinson have promised to investigate.

But, Robinson emphasized that remaining board members and SANCA staff are otherwise very happy with Blackketter, who told Robinson that the actions in the video are justified. Robinson said he wasn’t aware of any specific policies for employees with regard to disagreements with other individuals.

“I am treating this seriously,” Robinson said. “I spoke with Paul today and will meet with the board to determine the next move.”

He said that from the board’s standpoint, it is important to give Blackketter an opportunity to tell his side of the story. He declined to say who Blackketter was addressing in the video or to identify the cause of the conflict.

A spokesperson for the Sarasota County, for whom SANCA manages Nathan Benderson Park, provided a letter from Assistant County Administrator Steve Botelho to Robinson. In that letter, Botelho said the county "expects the highest level of professionalism from all who represent (them),” including contractors and vendors.

Robinson said of the county’s input, “We’re a public nonprofit, so it’s important we take into account public opinion.”

He added that, aside from the incident in question, “From a performance standpoint, we’re very happy with what he’s doing.”
