If crews keep working at their current pace, the contractor building the Five Points roundabout expects to open the intersection ahead of schedule.

Jason Swift, president of Jon F. Swift Inc., didn’t want to say how far ahead of schedule he is, but some downtown business owners said workers have told them they are two weeks ahead at this point.

The official completion date for the intersection is Sept 3. Crews will continue working on things such as road resurfacing and landscaping after Five Points reopens.

More than half of the paver surface in the roundabout has been placed. Much of the concrete curbs have been formed, and the center of the roundabout is taking shape.

There is great incentive for the contractor to complete the job early. The company will receive $5,000 per day for every day early it opens the intersection.

The project began July 5.
