A woman who ran a red light this morning at Ringling Boulevard and East Avenue hit another driver traveling in the other direction and nearly careened smack into a parking garage.

Police say the woman was not paying attention to the stoplight at about 8 a.m. this morning as she drove eastbound on Ringling. The other driver was going south on East Avenue and was struck in the intersection.

The woman drove over a curb and across a sidewalk and demolished a wooden sign before finally coming to a stop.

She was injured and taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for treatment. Her current condition is not known. The other driver was treated and released.

The woman was given a citation for running a red light.
