Police headquarters opens for business

The Sarasota Police Department officially moves its operations to its new headquarters building today.

For 51 years, the department had been located at 2050 Ringling Blvd. Officers will work out of the $46 million building at 2099 Adams Lane, which is adjacent to Payne Park.

The colorful new headquarters is 201,000 square feet, more than 140,000 feet larger than the Ringling Boulevard building.

Th new headquarters features seven conference rooms (the current station has two); community meeting room for award ceremonies, media events and neighborhood groups; dedicated training room with updated gym facility; and surveillance in nearly every corner of the building.

“It’s a 21st-century building,” said Capt. Paul Sutton. “Everything is better about it.”
