Longboat Key Police will begin placing windshield notices on vehicles to remind motorists about vehicle security.

The notices will allow police to check a box indicating whether or not a vehicle was locked and list items that should be removed from the vehicle.

According to Longboat Key Police Chief Pete Cumming, officers won’t physically check whether vehicle doors are unlocked but will instead be on the lookout for visible things that could make a car an easy target such as an obviously unlocked door, open window or valuables in plain sight while patrolling public parking areas by foot.

Cumming hopes that the notices will allow the public and police to work together toward preventing crime.
