Pipeline construction continues (WITH VIDEO)

Connecting a new water pipeline to the old pipeline at Gulf of Mexico Drive and Bay Isles Road has created some traffic and pedestrian issues.

Concrete barriers were placed at the construction site this week where crews are working to connect the pipes and pressurize the system, according to Public Works Director Juan Florensa.

But the barriers have created a difficult right turn for motorists attempting to head northbound on Gulf of Mexico Drive.

The construction also has closed the sidewalk in the area, creating obstacles for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Town Engineer Anne Ross said the construction in the area should be complete by Friday, Sept. 10.

“No other area where connections need to be made are as close to the road as this site is,” Ross said.

Police Chief Al Hogle said the town is looking for a way to make the site more accessible for pedestrians in the meantime.

This month, the town’s contractor will be connecting the new 18,000 feet of linear pipes to Longboat Key residences. Homeowners will be alerted when water shutoffs are necessary.
