Pedestrian bridge to undergo repairs

The city of Sarasota is working on repairing a warped pedestrian bridge that connects two of its bayfront properties.

The Hog Creek pedestrian bridge links the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall to the Boulevard of the Arts property formerly occupied by the Gulfcoast Wonder and Imagination Zone (GWIZ). The bridge, which is 20 years old, is warped and will be replaced with a wood alternative, according to a city release. The expected completion date of the project is June 27.

The construction project will also include replacements for four observation decks along the bay behind the Van Wezel. Work on the decks, which have become a public safety concern, is expected to begin in July. The decks are scheduled to be in place by mid-September.

The total budgeted cost of the improvement project is $236,000. The funds for the project are coming from the county penny sales tax.
