After receiving complaints that panhandlers have been targeting people using the new downtown parking meters, the city is looking to take action.

Commissioners will be asked Monday to approve an ordinance that would make it illegal to panhandle within 20 feet of a parking meter, because it wants to prevent people from feeling intimidated as they use the meters.

Panhandling already is illegal at a number of places, including bus stops, city buses, sidewalk cafes, public parks and public parking garages.
