When the City Commission rejected downtown parking meters in September, it instructed city staff to conduct a public education campaign to prepare citizens for the possibility of meters in 2010.

Staff will detail its proposal for that campaign at today’s City Commission meeting. It will cost up to $24,000.

Commissioners initially approved a paid-parking plan in August, but they did so hastily at the end of a meeting, and it was unclear to the city’s parking department where downtown the commission wanted the meters.

A plan was created, but commissioners said it was not what they wanted. They voted to start the education campaign and then revisit the idea of paid parking in mid-2010.
