Sue Mallick, 90, of Sarasota and formerly of Longboat Key, died Nov. 18.

Born in the Belgian Congo to Methodist missionaries, she was educated in Arkansas and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1941 from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, where she was a Kappa Kappa Gamma member.

Mrs. Mallick taught for two years before earning a master’s degree from William and Mary’s School of Social Work at The Richmond Professional Institute in Richmond, Va. She went on to become a field director of Girl Scouts in Pittsburgh, where, in 1945, she met her husband, U.S. Navy Capt. Edgar Mallick, on a blind date. They married six weeks later and had three children.

The family lived in many homes across the United States and Far East. She often taught school in the locations where her husband was stationed overseas.

Mrs. Mallick was co-founder and owner of The Gourmet’s Cup, the first coffee house in Annapolis, Md. After seven years, she sold her interest to take a 100-day University of Pittsburgh semester-at-sea voyage around the world with her husband on the USS Universe.

Locally, Mrs. Mallick served as president of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumni Association of Sarasota and Manatee counties.

Mrs. Mallick is survived by her husband, Edgar, of Sarasota; children Kathryn Nissly, of Lancaster, Pa., Susan Stevenson, of Orlando, and Dr. Edgar Mallick Jr., of Annapolis; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is tentatively planned for spring 2013.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 171 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, Md., 21401; or Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation, P. O. Box 38, Columbus, Ohio, 43216.
