Nora Mae Dillon Murphy, 78, of Venice and formerly of Longboat Key, died Feb. 5.

Born in Bronx, N.Y., she graduated from St. Barnabas High School in 1954.

Ms. Murphy raised her family in Woodlawn, N.Y., and had a long, satisfying career at Montefiore Medical Center.

Ms. Murphy is remembered as an amazing mother and friend to her children, who have fond memories of sing-alongs to “Make Believe Ballroom,” summers at Rockaway Beach and her love of candy corn and chocolate.

Ms. Murphy retired in 1991 to Longboat Key and moved in 2005 to Venice. She was passionate about the many opportunities that retirement presented. She especially loved visiting her children and grandchildren, singing and volunteering. She was a long-time member of the Venetian Harmony chorus and also volunteered for more than 1,000 hours at Venice Regional Hospital and previously volunteered at the Longboat Library.

In Venice, Ms. Murphy lived in the community of Venetian Falls, where she enjoyed playing mahjongg and was a dedicated trivia member. She was an ardent theater fan and attended many local productions with her friends. Her friends and family brought her immeasurable joy.

Ms. Murphy was preceded in death by the love of her life, James Mazzeo. She is survived by her children, Susan Murphy Cohen, Carol Murphy, Maureen O’Connor and Kevin Murphy; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A funeral Mass was held Feb. 10. Contributions may be made to CURE (Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy), cureepilepsy.org.
