Obituary: Morton Friedman

Morton Friedman, of Longboat Key and Copake Lake, N.Y., died Nov. 24. He was 90.

Mr. Friedman was born Oct. 13, 1922. He joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was stationed in the Pacific during World War II. After an honorable discharge, he attended NYU and graduated with a teaching degree in mathematics. He joined his brother at Filmotype Corp. as head of sales, manufacturing premier phototypesetting equipment.

Mr. Friedman was an avid bridge and guitar player, fisherman, skier and golfer throughout his life, and it was on the golf course that he met his wife-to-be, Evelyn. The couple celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary in November.

The Friedmans moved to Baldwin, Long Island, N.Y., where they raised their three children and also spent time at Copake Lake. To deal with the terminal illness of their oldest son, Sy Roger, they moved to Redding, Conn., where Mr. Friedman became a member of the Redding Country Club.

After his retirement, Mr. Friedman began a second career teaching bridge classes at the local community college. During winter months on Longboat Key, he established bridge classes at local colleges and community centers. He won many bridge tournaments, which led to his achievement as a Gold Life Master.

In his later years, he split his time between Longboat Key and Copake Lake and wrote a column for local papers in Florida, New York and Connecticut called: “‘Bridgin’ the Gap.”

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; daughter, Roberta Lee Dixon, of Ithaca, N.Y.; son, Glenn Mitchell Friedman, of Redding, Conn.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A service will take place at 10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, at Bates and Anderson Funeral Home, in Hudson, N.Y., and a burial will be held at 2 p.m. at Beth David Cemetery, in Elmont, N.Y.
