Obituary: Harvey Noyes

Harvey LaVern Noyes Jr., 94, of Bradenton and formerly of Sharon, Pa., and Longboat Key, died Sept. 2.

Mr. Noyes was born Jan. 9, 1920, to Harvey and Mildred Christie Noyes. Mr. Noyes graduated from Oil City High School, in Oil City, Pa., and attended Youngstown University. He served four years in the United States Army Air Forces as a top turret gunner on a B-17 and flew 25 missions over Germany, France and Norway.

He was awarded four air medals and a distinguished flying cross. After returning to the U.S., he was stationed at Maxwell Air Base in Montgomery, Ala. While there he met his future wife, Lorena Murphree. After his discharge, they married Sept. 22, 1945, in Montgomery.

Mr. Noyes was employed by General American Transportation Corp. for 37 years. The Noyeses had one daughter, Martha F. Stein.

He was a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church and served as a deacon and elder in his two former churches, The First Presbyterian Church, Sharon, Pa., and The Oak Street Presbyterian Church, Sarasota. He recently joined Christ Church of Longboat Key. 

After his retirement, Mr. Noyes moved to Longboat Key and became a permanent resident in 1984. He enjoyed golfing, tennis and fishing but most of all attending his grandsons’ academic and athletic activities. He was a member of the Longboat Key Kiwanis Club and a charter member of Cedars Tennis Club.

Mr. Noyes was a 73-year member of Fraternal Lodge No. 483 Free and Accepted Masons, Rouseville, Pa., a 32 degree Mason of Scottish Rights, New Castle, Pa., and life member of Zem Zem Shrine, Erie Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Lorena; daughter, Martha Stein; three grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Christ Church of Longboat Key, 6400 Gulf of Mexico Drive. Interment was at the Sarasota Veterans National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 1645 W. Eighth St., Erie, PA 16505 or the Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key.
