Arlene Bornstein

Arlene Bornstein, 75, of Sarasota and formerly of Longboat Key and Newton Center, Mass., died Sunday, Aug. 23. She was born May 7, 1934.

Mrs. Bornstein is survived by her husband, Kenneth; daughters Susan Freed and Nancy Yaguda; sister, Linda Rosenbaum; and four grandchildren.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at Palms-Robarts Funeral Home, 170 Honore Ave., Sarasota. Burial will follow at Palms-Robarts Memorial Park. Memorial contributions can be made to the Wellness Community of Southwest Florida, 3900 Clark Road, Suite P3, Sarasota, Fla., 34233.

Jerry Hasson

Jerry Hasson, 82, of Sarasota and formerly of Longboat Key and Bloomsburg, Pa., died Friday, Aug. 21.

Born April 27, 1927, in Harlem, N.Y., Mr. Hasson was raised in Bloomsburg and graduated from Berwick High School, in Berwick, Pa., and Traphagen School of Fashion, in New York City.

After graduation, Mr. Hasson served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II in Germany and Switzerland.

He returned to Berwick and became a designer and manager for Milco Industries before moving to Bloomsburg and becoming vice president and co-owner of the company.

Mr. Hasson was a longtime member and past president of the Berwick Rotary Club and an active member in the Jaycees, the American Legion and the Elks. He served as president of the Frosty Valley Country Club, in Danville, Pa. He was a member of Beth Israel Congregation, in Bloomsburg.

Mr. Hasson retired in 1990 and moved with his wife, Doris, to Longboat Key and, later, Sarasota. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, golfing, dancing and big band music.

Mr. Hasson is survived by his wife of 56 years, Doris; daughters, Jaynee Hasson, of Sarasota, Shelley Hunt, of Greensboro, N.C., and Nancee Weirman, of Bloomsburg; son, Robert, of Sarasota; brother, Herbert, of Naples; sister, Edith Hackbarth, of New Jersey; and four granddaughters.

Private services will be held in Sarasota. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a donor’s favorite charity in memory of Mr. Hasson.

Suresh Kumar Verma

Suresh Kumar Verma, 85, of Longboat Key, died Aug. 19.

Born Feb. 19, 1924, in Nagpur, India, Mr. Verma came to the United States in 1945 to study electrical engineering. He married his wife, Diana, in 1948, and went on to build a consulting engineering firm based in Joliet, Ill.

Mr. Verma enjoyed poker and is remembered by his family for his wit and knowledge of world affairs.

Mr. Verma is survived by his children, Raj Bhushan Verma, of Palatine, Ill.; Kiran Kimbell, of East Greenwich, R.I.; Tara Warren, of Monee, Ill.; and Rani Quirk, of Marietta, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Friends and family gathered on Longboat Key to celebrate Mr. Verma’s life. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association, www.diabetes.org.
