+ Town is on the road to resurfacing project
Resurfacing of the following town streets will begin next week: Lois Avenue from Broadway to Bayside Drive; the west part of Broadway including the beach-access parking; Firehouse Road; Joy Street; Wake Island Road, the Emerald Harbor entrance; Putting Green Lane around the 500 block, along with island repairs; and the Country Club Shores south entrance.

Weather permitting, construction will begin the week of Aug. 12, and will be complete in two or three weeks. Residents of each street will be notified within 24 hours of when the paving will take place.

Streets will first be swept and have their sod and soils clipped back at the edge of the pavement. In some locations, the existing asphalt will be removed within 6 feet of the edge of the curb.

In the third week of August, streets will be tacked with liquid asphalt before new asphaltic concrete will be placed, followed by the final sweeping and cleanup.

Drivers should avoid traveling on the tack coat and hot asphalt immediately after placement. Typically, you will be able to drive on the street within one hour of pavement completion. Streets will be open to traffic flow at all times for emergencies.

+ Turtle nest opening scheduled for Wednesday
A turtle nest opening has been scheduled for 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the Shore condominium, 5757 Gulf of Mexico Drive. Park in any uncovered space and walk through to the beach at the north end.

The event will take place rain or shine and will be canceled only in the event of lightning.

+ Water service meters replacement begins this month
Potable water service meters will be replaced throughout the town starting this month at no cost to water customers. The replacement program will be ongoing through February. Minimal water-service interruption will occur when the meter is changed. Water meters have a life of 10 to 15 years.

A town-hired contractor will install the new meters. The contractor will have a letter from the town with them when they are replacing meters in case residents inquire what kind of work is being performed on their properties. Public outreach methods for water-meter replacements will include utility bill inserts, a mailing, street signs in immediate work areas, door hangers and a knock on doors when meters are being replaced.
