Do you want your child to attend a high school other than he or she is zoned to attend?

Starting Monday, parents of Manatee County students entering ninth or 10th grade can submit an application during the High School Choice Open Enrollment Session, which runs through Jan. 22.

The timeframe is the only opportunity parents have to request their child attend a different school than they're assigned, without giving a specific reason for the request, a Manatee County School District press release said.

Applications are available online at manateeschools.net.

Click Hot Topics, then School Choice if applying online. Applicants can also visit the Office of Student Assignment, located at 1400 1st Ave. E., Palmetto.

Not all applicants are guaranteed approval for their chosen school, though. Approvals are subject to enrollment capacities at that school, the release said.

For example, Lakewood Ranch and Braden River high schools are already over their capacity limit, while Bayshore High School is 200 students below its capacity.
