On April 27, the Florida Senate voted in favor of a bill that would allow the use of cameras to ticket violators at red lights.

The East County Observer caught up with some residents of Tara Golf & Country Club to get their thoughts on red-light cameras.

What are your thoughts about red-light cameras?

Wilma McCray
“I’m in favor of them. I just feel that I have been very close to having someone run the light, and I don’t feel like it’s infringing on my rights.”

Barbara Loreto
“I’m definitely in favor of cameras. I have no objection to it. I think it’s a good thing. Hopefully it’ll make people take (notice) and stop running red lights.”

Carlis Knight
“I approve of them because I’ve almost been clipped two or three times by people turning right on red without making a stop.”

Will Russell
“I’m in favor of red-light cameras because I think it’ll help out with some of the really bad intersections — one of the worst is Tara Boulevard and State Road 70. We’ve already had one death there and numerous accidents. The sheriff’s office and the state can’t even give us a count on how many accidents have happened there.”

Don Smith
“I don’t see anything wrong with them. If it helps stop people from running red lights, which I see quite often, then I say, ‘Good luck.’”
