The Longbeach Village Association recently culled its famous peacock flock from 60 birds to almost a dozen birds.

On Wednesday, June 2, one of the birds that made the cut and will live to see another year on Longboat Key stands peacefully in the shade just off Broadway. In the background, another peacock can be heard squawking in the distance.

The Town Commission voted to give Longbeach $2,400 for a second consecutive year to help manage its peacock population.

A peacock population that is too large is considered a nuisance for many Village residents, who complain of damaged yards, damaged porch screens and severe scratches to their cars.
