The Longboat Key Police Department has a possible lead on the individual responsible for a rash of political vandalism on Beer Can Island.

Officers are pursuing a suspect wanted for painting driftwood trees with slogans touting presidential candidate Bernie Sanders this weekend, said Chief Pete Cumming. If caught, the suspect would face misdemeanor charges.

A viral Facebook post with several pictures of the trees adorned with slogans such as “Feel the Bern” and “Bernie!” has been shared more than 1,000 times.

Public works staff is working this week to figure out how to remove the graffiti, Cumming said.
