A Vermont couple was so touched by a Longboat Key police officer’s act of kindness on Feb. 3 that they took the time to write a letter to the chief of police to commend the officer.

Officer Dean Greathouse discovered the couple stranded on the side of the road, with a flat tire.

Wrote Joan and Doug Shaw in a letter dated March 3: “Officer Greathouse was more than helpful to a couple of old people and saved us much time and grief by changing the tire himself and contacting a local Enterprise agency himself to arrange for them to give us a different car for the rest of our trip. We are very indebted to Officer Greathouse. He was very pleasant and kind to helpless old fogies from the north and we will not forget him!”

Police Chief Al Hogle was pleased with the letter.

“Officer Greathouse displays both a positive attitude and attention to detail that makes him a very important asset for the citizens of our community and for the Longboat Key Police Department,” Hogle said.
