Longboat Key Mayor Jack Duncan, 67, was hospitalized after a procedure for heart issues Friday.
The hospitalization came to light after Duncan canceled a scheduled meeting with organizers proposing a water taxi link between Bradenton Beach, Longboat Key and Anna Maria Island.
The family has not yet released a statement on the hospitalization.
"The doctors analyzed his medical condition and developed a treatment plan. A full recovery is anticipated. I'm confident he'll be fine and back on the dais with gavel in hand soon," said Susan Phillips, assistant to Town Manager David Bullock.
"When I spoke with the mayor yesterday, he was upbeat, positive and confident the treatment would be successful. It's needed and he's going to be better for it."
Vice Mayor Terry Gans will be in charge of the Longboat Key Town Commission during Duncan’s convalescence.
“If he’s not able to conduct a meeting, I’ll conduct the meeting as we’ve done in the past,” Gans said. “I may have to run a meeting.”
The Longboat Key Commission meets next at 7 p.m. Dec. 5.
Duncan, a retired marketing executive, moved to Longboat Key in 2002. He is term-limited and will end a six-year run on the town commission in March.
