Dick Lobo, recently nominated by President Barack Obama to the position of national director of broadcasting, was the guest speaker at the April 13 meeting of the Longboat Key Democratic Club, held at The Chart House.

He has served as CEO of WEDU, West Central Florida’s PBS station, for eight years. Lobo, the son of Cuban immigrants, was raised in Ybor City, Tampa, and has had a long career in broadcasting.

“National Public Radio is in trouble,” Lobo said. “They have to find their own niche.”

At WEDU, new and varied programs helped the station meet its budget. Lobo said he is looking forward to his new job in Washington, where the main goal will be to get America’s message of freedom and democracy to countries around the world.

The Democratic Club will resume monthly meetings in the fall.
