As the temperatures begin to drop and the days become shorter, winter is the perfect time to curl up with a good book. Whether you’re a biography buff or the type who likes to lose yourself in a thrilling mystery, the Longboat Library provides something for every reader.

The library, which specializes in recreational reading material, is now open for its winter hours. The library is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays.

The Longboat Library currently has 18,000 to 20,000 titles in stock, including fiction and non-fiction, mysteries, biographies and a collection of audio books. It also offers books for sale.

“We are always adding new titles based on what our patrons are interested in reading,” says Carolyn Mangel, library volunteer.

Membership fees range from $20 per year for regular membership, which allows members to check out two seven-day books, four 14-day books and two audio books at a time; and $35 per year for patron membership, which allows members to check out four seven-day books, eight 14-day books and four audio books at a time.

Bookworms can also purchase a lifetime membership for a one-time fee of $300, which provides the same membership privileges as a patron, as well as the member’s name inscribed on a plaque.

“We strive to serve the community, and it is the community that supports us,” says Mangel of the non-profit organization, which is supported solely by membership fees and donations and staffed entirely by volunteers.
